About PRP hair restoration

PRP hair restoration is a completely natural procedure that uses growth factors from your body’s own plasma to stimulate dormant hair follicles into action. Our plasma is very rich in growth factors that contain dozens of platelets, which are tiny cells that assist with healing and tissue repair. Over a series of PRP treatments with Tseng Plastic Surgery, the growth factors within the platelets trigger blood flow and new hair growth.

The science of PRP hair restoration

Platelets are nature’s ambulance. Whenever we become injured and begin to bleed, our platelets immediately start clotting the blood, thereby helping to stop the bleeding and heal the tissues.

When administered to inactive hair follicles, this same “ambulance” has the ability to create new hair growth by kick-starting them into an active growth phase. Over a series of treatments, the result is fuller, thicker, healthier hair.

Things to consider with PRP

It’s important for those who are considering PRP hair restoration to be aware that this procedure can be a lengthy process that requires multiple sessions for satisfactory outcome and maintenance.

Results are not immediate, and in fact final outcome may take up to 6 to 12 months. It’s also important to understand that your specific type of hair loss may not respond to the PRP at all.

During your consultation with Dr. Tseng, he will take into consideration your specific type of hair loss and your personal goals to determine if you are a good candidate for PRP treatments.

Before treatment

Stop taking any blood thinning medications or supplements for one week prior to your PRP treatment. Make sure the day of your appointment, you are well hydrated and have eaten a meal beforehand.

PRP hair restoration treatment details

Before treatment, your scalp will be cleansed, and a strong anesthetic cream will be applied to numb the area. This will help minimize any discomfort from the injections. Next, 1 to 2 ounces of blood will be drawn from your arm and processed in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the platelet-rich plasma, thereby isolating the plasma that contains most amount of growth factors. This plasma is then put into a syringe so that it can be directly administered to the targeted hair follicles via injections. While the area will be numb and the injections are superficial, you may feel some pressure. However, PRP treatments are reported to be very tolerable with the help of the topical anesthetic. Treatment time will be different for everyone depending on their specific condition; however, in general treatment time is approximately an hour and a half.

Recovery

One of the best things about PRP hair restoration is that there’s no real downtime, and the majority of patients return to their normal day after treatment. Some patients experience scalp tenderness and/or swelling, itching, or pinpoint bleeding at the injection sites. This is normal and temporary. Sleep the first night with your head elevated. You may wash your hair normally 24 hours following treatment, but we do recommend avoiding hair dyes or blow drying for at least two days.

Results

As mentioned above, PRP hair restoration requires patience. As a very gradual procedure, it demands consistent sessions and closely followed home care instructions. We recommend 2 or 3 treatments a year for men, and one treatment per year for women. Maintenance treatments should be scheduled every 3 to 6 months. You will begin noticing results in about four months, with final outcome apparent anywhere from 6 to 12 months. These results typically last 12 to 16 months.
